INDIA'S FORGOTTEN WAR – blogging naxalism.

Unexpected Hiatus

with 7 comments

Apologies to my readers for having been quiet this past month. I’ve spent most of the summer studying for the dreaded comprehensive exams and had expected that my blogging would be light.

Unfortunately I also broke my right arm last month which has made writing (at least writing with caps) nearly impossible. It’s pretty much healed and I’ll resume regular blogging later this week. Check back soon….

  1. Some clarity about the best way forward seems to be emerging from the Indian authorities at last (if not from the longwinded comment linked above).

“A comprehensive response—which combines both security and development—is the best of all. Thus on July 14th, the government said that it is setting up a “unified command” structure to oversee state-level efforts to fight against the rebels, using the expertise of a former army general, and increased army logistical support and helicopters. But it also announced there would be more cash for development projects in Maoist-dominated areas.”

    Get well soon, Michael!

    • Security & dev approach is no novelty; on paper, the two-pronged approach is fine, the problem remains in the implementation however. when you focus on security, you alienate people & then does development suffice? & implementation has been India’s problem since independence.

the ‘longwinded’ comment that i expressed focused on the ideological aspects of the Maoists & whether they may “talk” at all with the govt. And I still suggest that “talks” are the most viable option for both the parties.

Even before, the GoI had gone for discussions with CMs of respective provinces to chalk out a unified plan. The induction of an Army General is a novelty.
