Similar to the US’s ‘strategic hamlet’ program during the Vietnam war, the Chhattisgarh government has established a series of re-settlement camps for the indigenous people of the Bastar region.

Ostensibly the camp residents have relocated voluntarily, fleeing from Maoist activity in their villages. In reality, many have been forced to move through intimidation, threats and violence perpetrated by the state sponsored militia, the Salwa Judum.
